Future of Nursing
RWJF in conjunction with IOM came up with a report that was aimed at improving caregiving by the nursing personnel in the US. The report, which was dubbed Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, was anchored on the primary concern of improving healthcare nursing services. This article discusses how the key elements contained in the report and how New York has adopted it to alleviate their healthcare standards.
The work of RWJFC That Led to IOM report
One of the key reasons for the report was to examine and come up with recommendations for the role of nurses in the healthcare industry. Nurses constitute the largest number of professionals in the healthcare industry and their involvement, contribution and presence has a significant impact on healthcare provision CITATION Rob10 \l 1033 ( Institute of Medicine; Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine, 2010). The context of nurses in the entire workforce, shortage, current and future technology and societal issues, makes nursing an indispensable element in the healthcare industry. Therefore, the report contains recommendations which aim at redefining and restructuring the existing framework of nursing involvement in healthcare provision and it also features how to map nurses on a more proactive position in the entire workforce.
The committee was also expected to examine and report on the effects of expanding the nursing faculty. In the report, recommendations on why the federal, state and local governments ought to increase the capacity of nursing schools while redesigning and restructuring the nursing education program. The new system ought to produce enough number of well-prepared nurses who have the skills and experience to meet current and future demands CITATION Han151 \l 1033 (Hansen-Turton, Sherman, & King, 2015). The committee was tasked to come up with a way in which nurses could achieve higher levels of education and training through a seamless academic progression and improved education system.
The committee was tasked to come up with a structure in which nurses are full partners with other health professionals in redesigning health care in the country. Healthcare reforms have been previously overlooking the contribution and significance of nurses in remodeling the healthcare system despite having the largest number of healthcare professionals. The committee ought to come up with a way they could encompass nurses and bring them to the high table of policy making.
They were also supposed to come up with a mechanism to attract and retain well-prepared nurses in multiple care settings. Losing experienced and well-trained nurses in ambulatory, primary care, long-term care, community and public health settings threatens their vision. The committee ought to find a lasting mechanism to attract and retain nurses to serve for maximum duration possible as they advance their skills and experience to improve the quality of their services. This recommendation also sought to create a more culturally diverse workforce to provide custom healthcare services to culturally diverse clientele.
