History of Present Illness or HPI is the historical record and description of the development of a patient's disease and progress. It is mainly chronological and starts from the first sign and symptom of the patient's condition to the current situation (Laughlin-Tommaso, 2021). It includes an overall assessment and details such as the parts of the body affected, the severity of symptoms, duration, timing, and other associated factors that can help in the disease's treatment and study.
On the other hand, psychiatric HPI is an assessment similar to a physical examination specially made for evaluating patients with psychiatric problems. It has a standardized process, which the examiner can customize depending on the patient's signs and symptoms. The assessment has been created to systematically evaluate and help the psychiatrist understand how to deal with the situation.
