Alcoholism is a critical phenomenon that impacts social life. In contemporary society, alcohol use has become legal regardless of the adverse outcomes such as breaking social relationships and mental health issues. The paper examines the history of alcohol use, inappropriate uses, regulation and treatment.
History of Legal Alcohol Use
Alcohol is one of the legal substances which heavily impacts social life. The historical use of alcohol dates between 5000 and 5400 BC (Dguzeh et al., 2018). It was initially made using honey, fruit juice and fermented grains, and the traditional individuals used the identified elements due to accessibility and cheapness. After several technological adaptations in the production of alcohol, it was announced illegal due to the adverse alterations in the brain. However, the exact legal use of alcohol started in 1919, January 16th, after the ratification of the 18th amendment. The amendment allowed individuals to consume alcohol but within the age limit. Alcohol use became legal after the justification that it had a specific sense of alteration and would negatively impact when efficiently regulated. Therefore, there was a strong belief that it would be sustained in society with adequate regulation.
Inappropriate use of Alcohol
Despite the legalization of alcohol, different populations have used it inappropriately, thus leading to detrimental effects. The first way of inappropriate alcohol use is underage consumption. Underage consumption of alcohol is detrimental since it leads to early school dropouts and detrimental and antisocial teen behaviors (Jakubczyk et al., 2018). Therefore, it affects the mental health of the underage and heavily impacts their future. Excessive alcoholism is also a symbol of inappropriate alcohol use.
