The four major areas of statistics are the theory of probability and the application of statistics in mathematics; the evaluation of health tools and their margin and standard deviation of errors; the design of the qualitative and quantitative studies; and the compilation of data, together with its summarization and interpretation (Feinleib, 2014). After the prehistoric era, statistics is utilized to collect and to analyze data for the improvement of the society. It is utilized to calculate and to predict mortality and morbidity rates, both in the medical and the pollical fields. Furthermore, it has been used to analyze the patterns and presentations of diseases in people (Nunan et al, 2017).
During the peak of the Roman Empire, surveys are conducted frequently for the evaluation of tax dues to fund the military services. It is also used to record the number of live births in every season. However, after the fall of the Roman empire, registration of each living individual has not been done until the 18th century. There were only sporadic efforts to record the census of births and deaths which were based on the archives of the church collected from weddings, christenings, and internments (Frank, 1930).
London, United Kingdom was one of the first cities to standardize and maintain archives for demographics which was started in 1538. But this was only authorized within the Church of England. The archives include the statistics on the plague epidemic which include the mortality and morbidity rates. These were recorded by the clergy on a weekly basis and are published on the weekly “Bills of Mortality” that warns the bourgeois to leave the area to prevent incurring the diseases. This has been done from 1604 to 1842 (Feinleib, 2014).
Another prominent person in this field is John Graunt, who issued a book entitled, “Natural and Political Observations Made Upon the Bills of Mortality.” He studied the rate of mortality in London based on the weekly Bills of Mortality and formulated a life table that paved the way to political arithmetic, analysis f the stability of statistical rations, and the computation of life expectancy and survival probabilities (Graunt, 1975).
