Briefly identify and describe the structure and function of a typical motor neuron.
Motor (efferent) neurons stimulate movement. They are responsible for transmitting information from the CNS. These neurons also emit signals from the central nervous system to the muscles and thus affect their movement. "Each axon of the motor neuron usually divides into many branches called terminal branches as it approaches the muscle" (Marieb & Smith, 2016). Motor neurons send impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles, and this influences movement.
Briefly discuss the function(s) of axons, dendrites, and Schwann cells' role in the formation of the myelin sheath.
Schwann cells (neurolemmocytes) are flattened in shape and perform the same functions in the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) as the other glial cells in the Central Nervous System. One of its main tasks is to form the myelin sheath around the PNS axons, and this task is linked to oligodendrocytes in the CNS. Each Schwann cell forms a single myelin sheath around an axon.
