The Heritage Assessment Tool is widely used by healthcare professionals to evaluate the ethnic, cultural and religious histories of patients. The data collected with this tool helps determine the best treatment or medication for a specific illness. It’s safe to say that a person’s religion, culture, and background impact his health to an extent. The doctor is responsible for collecting data related to his background, family, and then prepare a care plan accordingly. He can make the best use of the Heritage Assessment Tool to help the patient recover from a disease. I have selected high school students for this assignment, and they belong to the Caucasian, Hispanic and Afro-American cultures (Pla & Maya, 2016).
Culture#1: Native American or Caucasian
This culture is a perfect blend of varying beliefs, cultures and ethnicities. The student of this culture belongs to a middle-class family whose grandparents were born and raised in Tennessee. They spent their entire life in the rural area and chose to keep themselves away from the urban lifestyle considering it useless and meaningless. It should be noticed that Tennessee is a mountainous area where people use midwives to deliver care to their babies. They are of the view that in this way, they ensure the provision of best care, treatment, and health to their children. They also claim that it is a part of their culture and that they do so because they love their children and care for their future. My student is physically and mentally healthy, and just like his elders, he depends on homemade foods and fresh juices for his survival. He does not like fast foods especially pizzas, soft drinks, and burgers, calling them bad for health (Gnevsheva, 2018).
In his childhood, his parents moved to New York, where they raise all of the children in a religiously restricted environment. They chose to stay away from the competitive environment and used to spend a lot of time with their children in the evening. People belonging to this culture do not contact doctors for minor complications. Instead, they try home remedies and herbs to cure the disease. In the meantime, they firmly believe in the existence of spirits and ghosts and claim that their wellbeing, health, and survival are associated with these spirits in one way or the other. The student I chose for the assignment had a similar point of view. Instead of visiting his doctor, he used to worship those so-called spirits at home in uncertain situations or after the onset of a disease. He was of the view that healing and recovery from an illness are possible only when they take care of rituals, so the sick people always turn to ghosts and spirits for their health and the resolution of their problems (Gnevsheva, 2018).
Culture#2: Hispanic
Just like Native Americans, people belonging to the Hispanic culture strongly believe in the existence of spirits and ghosts. They do not visit their doctors and instead seek help from these supernatural powers. My student was suffering from low blood pressure, and his doctor had asked him to take medicines regularly.
