Introduction
In the field of guidance and counseling, the counselor is bound to meet with different types of clients. The different types of clients have different needs. In order to ensure success in addressing the needs of the different clients, it is crucial that the client portrays the personality characteristics that are best suited in addressing the needs of the specific clients. This is above the usual personality characteristics expected of a counselor in the counseling such as confidentiality. This paper addresses the personality characteristics that are helpful to a counselor in addressing clients that are; resistant, overly talkative, suicidal and angry. Each category of client has been addressed.
Resistant clients
At times, the counselors have to deal with resistant clients. One could be tempted to think that such kind of clients should not be attended because of their resistance; but the ethical facets of guidance have it that every client deserves service. A counselor who has to address a client with resistance should have a personality characteristic denoting self drive. This is whereby; the counselor is able to develop own philosophy concerning the resistance of clients. On this note, the counselor will be able to understand and address the dynamics of the resistance. The counselor will understand, for instance, the origin of the resistance of the client. The counselor will also be able to understand the extent of the effects of the resistance. This way, the counselor is able to address the needs of the resistant clients effectively. When the counselor has deliberated on resistance as a need that may arise in a client, they are able to foresee it before it manifests in the clients. This way, they are able to address it in an effective manner.
Overly talkative clients
In dealing with the overly talkative clients, it is crucial that the counselor adopts some useful personality characteristics. The issue of overly talkativeness needs to be addressed with listening and attentive characteristics. This is because; if the talkative client realizes that the counselor is not paying attention to them they are bound to develop negative attitude towards the counselor and there will be no success in the counseling efforts. Brown, Moller & Ramsey-Wade (2013) note that; the attending behavior characteristics are denoted by actions such as facing the client squarely. This gives them the idea that you are paying attention to them. Head notes and eye contacts are also behaviors associated with listening skills which emanate from the personality characteristic of attentiveness.
Suicidal client
