Healthy People 2020 (HP) entail goals and objectives in the U.S. to improve health and reduce health disparities. Despite the numerous challenges, it is evident that the mission and goals for Healthy People 2020 have been reasonable and have played a part in reducing health disparities in communities. This means that, although the goals have not been fully reached, there are indications that there are numerous health improvements in communities that can be attributed to the Healthy People 2020. Barile et al. (2012) assert that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has several approaches and measures it uses to measure the achievement of the Healthy People 2020 goals in various regions and communities. One of the Healthy People 2020 goals has been maternal, infant, and child health. The aim of this goal has been to improve health and reduce disparities among mothers, infants, and children. In regard, to achieve of this goal, major advances have been made in improving the health well-being of mothers, infants, and children despite the maternal, infant, and child health challenges that still exist in the U.S. According to in light of the failure (2012) article, the goals of Healthy People 2020 are not different to other goals in that some are achieved while others are not. In this regard, failing to achieve several goals of the Healthy People 2020 fully does not mean the whole initiative has been a failure (in light of the failure, 2012). Subsequently, it would not be right to indicate that the goals of Healthy People 2020 have been unreasonable due to the existence of health concerns in several communities.

There are several Healthy People 2020 goals, which tend to have several similarities despite being categorized as different topics. Some of the topics for Healthy People 2020, which are related to each, are substance abuse and tobacco. The first goal is aimed at reducing the use of substances that alter the mind and behavior among individuals, families, and communities. On the other hand, the second goal aims to ensure the reduction of deaths and disabilities that result from the use of tobacco. The two goals are similar as they aim to promote health by promoting the reduction of substances that have adverse health effects on individuals and communities. Substance use is a health disparity that involves the use of drugs and alcohol and often results in several destructive social impacts such as family breakage, financial troubles, decreased such productivity, and domestic violence, among many others.
In contrast, the use of tobacco often leads to numerous physical health problems like cancers, heart diseases, lung diseases, and vision impairments, among others. Subsequently, the two goals are somewhat similar but have differences, especially the impacts on victims. Given the current trends in the U.S., the essential Health People 2020 topic is heart disease and stroke. In recent years, coronary heart diseases have become one of the major causes of deaths in the U.S. Subsequently, the issue of heart diseases should be considered one of the health priorities among individuals and communities.
