Nursing retention involves keeping and preventing the rate at which nurses, leave and replaced in an organization’s employment such as hospitals and academic nursing institutions. The purpose of this program is to strengthen and come up with ways that will help retain new and current nurses in hospitals to facilitate proper medical services to patients and help maintain and improve people’s health (Hall, 2013).
The retention of nurses in hospitals is dependent on a number of factors such as, creating the right culture since nurses wish to work in good environments where they can be successful and provide the kind of care they practiced to deliver to patients. The hospitals should come up with a culture of quality, safety and service that attract nurses and retain the nurses already working in various hospitals around the country. Paying attention to what nurses say, rewarding and recognizing the nurses is important to retain them, retaining senior nurses is important to ensure the legacy of the culture is created. As the saying goes one can train someone in the proper technique to complete a task, but you cannot teach someone desire or compassion to be the best (Garber, 2010).
Moreover, self-governance is important in retaining nurses through quality improvement efforts, nurse practice councils, and group interviewing to limit nurse turnover and enhance nurse satisfaction. Besides, listening to nurses and acting on their issues is important in retaining nurses, as hospitals should practice to listen to nurses’ concerns, ideas to ensure nurses have enough supplies, and the equipment needed to practice effectively. Hospitals frequently ensure nurse satisfaction through surveys, which is essential in nurse retention.
In addition, Nurse Physician collaboration through nurse participation on clinical quality committees, along with physicians and professionals from other disciplines, which makes the nurses to appreciate and promotes collaboration between disciplines, is helpful in nurse retention. Likewise, developing leaders through nurse meetings with their supervisors to discuss steps towards helping them fulfill their goals. This creates a good relationship between managers and nursing staff and a good connection with fellow workers, which is essential to hospital success with retention of nurses. If nurses feel someone cares about them, they want to come to work every day because they feel their opinions count thus wish to participate. Moreover, Residency programming through identifying new graduates in residency programs improves retention. Not only new nurses are less likely to leave, experienced nurses feel less frustration and greater satisfaction when they know their efforts are not in vain (Dunton, 2011).
Professional support and development increases nurse retention by creating a supporting environment for professional practice development and growth.
