Compliance does not only apply in hospital practice but also physician offices. Healthcare providers in every aspect of healthcare delivery are expected to abide by particular requirements and compliance standards. For instance, physician offices that would like to participate in a federally funded program such as Medicare or Medicaid are expected to abide by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA). Physician practices or offices may perceive compliance programs as a burden, but the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) mandates healthcare entities and providers, such as physician practices of all sizes, to establish a compliance program as directed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)(Nix,2014). Physicians need to understand regulations that apply during billing for rendered services, enable them to work better with insurance companies, secure business relationships, and submit claims for federal-funded programs. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) expects individual physicians or small group physician practices to design and implement compliance programs. The OIG does not show leniency when there is a complete lack of compliance programs by healthcare providers. Thus, it would be better for any type of healthcare provider such as physician offices to adopt voluntary compliance programs.
