With the rapid advancement of medical technology, the health of most Americans has improved significantly. In the United States, the Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority group with a population of fifty-four million. This minority group struggles to survive on a daily basis and also to provide quality health care for their families (Williams, 2011). The focus of the paper will involve the current health status of the Hispanics. It will also highlight the definition of health promotion and the health disparities that this minority group encounters. Finally, the levels of health prevention and their effectiveness will be included.
Analysis
Current health status
The Center of Disease Control (CDC) stated that the Hispanics are 43 percent more likely not to possess health insurance compared to 13 percent of non-Hispanic whites that did not have medical coverage. When examining the health status of Hispanics, it becomes imperative to assess the overall health of this population (National Research Council, 2006). Since the Hispanic population is comprised of numerous different nationalities, which include Guatemalans, Columbians, Mexicans and also Puerto Ricans, all these variations have a common denominator when it comes to mortality.
The high mortality rate among Hispanics is mainly due to respiratory illnesses, diabetes, cancer, liver disease and heart problems. Diabetes is the most common illness in this minority population. Most Hispanics are more susceptible to type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic whites. Numerous non-Hispanic whites are largely prone to cancer problems such as lung cancer and breast cancer while Hispanics exhibit higher rates of renal and stomach cancer (National Research Council, 2006). This is according to the data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Health promotion
Health promotion mainly depends on ensuring that equitable distribution of resources is available to such a minority group. As for Hispanics, health promotion typically involves health care providers assisting the Hispanic community in taking charge of the important elements of their health (Edelman, Mandle, & Kudzma, 2017). This ultimately assists them in improving their overall health status.
Health disparities
In the U.S, the Hispanics encounter several health disparities which have only resulted in lack of access to acquiring proper healthcare. These disparities include education level cultural beliefs, socioeconomic status and significant language barrier issues. Hispanics in the U.S have a low documented income level, which has led to most of them only focusing on their daily upkeep (Williams, 2011). Twenty-nine percent of Hispanics additionally, do not possess any insurance coverage, which is a significant impediment, especially when they seek medical attention when necessary.
