Summary of Learning Style
Having a multimodal learning experience means learning through the combination of several strategies. Therefore, people whose learning preference is multimodal often use a combination of visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic strategies to learn. While they can learn through a single strategy, for the learning to be complete, many have to be taken through or take themselves through something again by applying different strategies. Teachers of such students will often find themselves creating lessons where they are making use of visual, auditory, and tactile methods. Maier (2010) writes that “multimodal teaching is successful because it appeals to all learning styles.” Every student will feel satisfied and will learn by whichever method that appeals to them. However, for those with a preference for multimodal learning, such teaching would mean that a student will have had the full package. If, for example, a student fails to fully understand something from one of the methods or strategies that was used, then the application of another would help clarify or offer a clear understanding.
