Health Care Leadership
Leadership is the process of guiding, encouraging, and providing goals and objectives to a group of people to accomplish a joint mission. Leadership has a wide range of definitions; one can be in leadership through volunteering or elections in various sectors such as social groups, teamwork, student government, and organizations. Institutional leadership leads to successful performance, a better quality of services, and productivity; for example, in the health care system, it will result in better patient care, hence good quality health care services. Therefore, leadership should be encouraged for better outcomes.
Management and treatment of patients at a health care facility is multidisciplinary, comprising; general practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, among others. All work as a team to provide adequate and quality patient care. In each group, there is a team leader whose role is to ensure cooperation and maximum achievement regarding the goal of the day. Organization and dissemination of functions by the team leaders in each group of health care practitioners is the experience that informed my thoughts about health care leadership. Effective communication is essential for health care leaders. There are communication strategies that aid in improving the leader’s ability to influence and motivate other members of the group. Hence, health leadership is one of the critical components of health setup to ensure the safe delivery of health care services (Rosen et al., 2018).
Authentic leaders are skillful at consistently being themselves; they can quickly adapt to changing contexts. Authentic leaders understand their authentic selves, define their values and principles, understand their driving force, build a strong team, and integrate their aspects in life. A genuine leader is confident, does not lose hope quickly, demonstrates resilience, possesses a high level of integrity, and is always positive (Goffee & Jones, 2015).
