According to the World Health Organization (n.d.), around 57, 000 children died from homicide from the year 2000. Many of these deaths are attributed to child abuse where the highest rates are seen in ages 0 to 4 years-old. Fatalities often result from a head and abdominal injuries, and intentional suffocation, respectively.
This is only the tip of the iceberg. Many children have been reported to suffer from non-fatal maltreatments and abuses. The majority of them are inflicted with severe physical abuse that involves being kicked, beaten, or tied up by adults, specifically, their parents. Sexual abuse is also prevalent where 20% of women and 5-10% of men suffer when they were children. Others suffer from harsh punishments that involve punching, kicking, or hitting in other institutions aside from their home. A great number of children are also subjected to emotional or psychological distresses (World Health Organization, n.d.).
Warning Signs
Some of the warning signs include bruises, welts, scalding injuries, burns, fractures, and lacerations. Others may not reflect physical but emotional and psychological injuries such as alcohol and drug abuse, global developmental delays, aggression, risk-taking behaviors, and cognitive impairments (World Health Organization, n.d.).
Health Practices Misidentified as Child Abuse
Some of the cultural healing practices that can be misidentified as a form of child abuse are the gua sha procedure and coining. Guasha is practiced in China and results in ecchymosis on the back of the patient. Coining or caogio is performed by rubbing the skin intensely. Hence, giving its other name as dermabrasion therapy. This is still practiced by the Vietnamese and Cambodians to treat many diseases (Killion, 2017).
Reporting
When child abuse is suspected, it can be directly reported to 911 or contact local child protective services such as National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cyber Tipline and Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline (Child Welfare Information Gateway, n.d.).
