The rising cost of healthcare in the United States and around the world calls for the implementation of both preventive and interventional measures to reduce global expenditure on the same. Chronic diseases such as cancer are cutting deep into the pockets of individuals and nations alike due to the high cost of treatment and provision of care. The training of professional care providers as specialist for patients diagnosed with such illness further strains the national expenditure on healthcare. It is, therefore, important to embrace research and development in the healthcare industry to come up with effective preventive and interventional measures aimed at reducing the cost of treatment and care provision to patients suffering the wide range of chronic diseases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has, for instance, developed various initiatives such as the public health genomics with an aim of sensitizing the public on the interventional measures taken in an effort to curb the rising cases of cancer. Among such initiatives include highlighting the guidelines, policies, and recommendations for dealing with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer by practitioners.
Breast cancer affects over 200,000 women in the United States annually with ovarian cancer accounting for approximately 20,000 cases CITATION Cen17 \l 1033 (Prevention, 2017). A percentage of the cases reported for both breast, and ovarian cancer result from genetic mutations existing and often passed down within families.
