The Future of Nursing Entrepreneurship
Nursing has evolved tremendously since the mid-19th century when it was recognized as an essential part of healthcare. Today, with nurses forming the largest workforce among healthcare professionals, they are set to be entrepreneurs on their terms. Esposito and Sollazzo (2018) state that entrepreneurship makes nursing a genuinely independent practice (p. 26). In other words, a nursing entrepreneur is a proprietor of a business organization focusing on the delivery of nursing services. These services may include direct care, consultative, research, administrative, and educational. Campell (2022) noted that only 0.75% of nurses work as entrepreneurs worldwide, using their education, experience, and business skills to establish and lead their businesses. Thus, individuals considering the nursing profession have alternative career paths instead of the traditional approach of working in healthcare organizations.
