* This fact sheet is intended for a general audience who has never heard of Ebola or has little knowledge of the health issue. It includes a summary of the nature of the disease and its origin history.
* By the end of the read, an individual will understand the means of prevention, implications and forms of treatment for Ebola. The information contained below is extracted from scholarly resources dedicated to the advancement of research on EVD.
Summary
* Ebola is a virus disease that is infectious to humans and non-human primates. The virus responsible for the disease EVD is mainly located in Sub-Saharan regions.
* People can contract EVD through direct contact with host animals such as a bat or sick or dead people from Ebola.
* The disease is considered an emerging health issue since its first recognition in 1970. This was the first of twin outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan.
* Approximately 300 people per country were infected with the disease. The disease had a mortality rate of 88% in Congo and 53& in Sudan. Over the years, there have been outbreaks such as the 2014 outbreak in West Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2018.
Implications
* In 2014, the spread of Ebola was of global significance defend to the previous outbreaks. The disease started in December 2013 in Guinea, consequently spreading to neighbouring countries such as Liberia and Sierra Leone. Imported cases spread the disease further to other African countries like Nigeria, Mali and Senegal. The United States and European countries such as Spain recorded instances of the disease CITATION Bay20 \l 1033 (Medicine, 2020).
* This outbreak was different because it showcased the ease with which the Ebola virus can spread. Previous outbreaks happened in remote regions in Africa; therefore, the spread was quickly contained.
