Step 1: Experience with Mr. Marchand and the Health Care Team
Working in the orthopedic unit has exposed me to several learning and improvement opportunities. I felt competent and bold in caring for Mr. Marchand in collaboration with the team. Teamwork is vital as it allows the delivery of informed and thorough patient care (Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative, 2010). All members of the interprofessional team from different units were involved in Mr. Marchand’s care. The social worker, Rebecca Solo, looked into the patient’s social welfare and arranged his discharge logistics.
In my stay at the unit and interacting with Mr. Marchand and his partner, I realized that he was not ready to go home as the social worker had informed him. Mr. Marchand’s partner was worried about the idea of him going home since his hoke was not ready to receive him in his state. They needed a raised toilet on the ground floor and a special cushion after the hip and knee replacement. Additionally, Mr. Marchand was going through pain and was reluctant to take medication. These concerns need to be communicated to the interprofessional team to find the best way to assist Mr. Marchand and his partner. I raised the concerns in the interprofessional team meeting, and all details were addressed collaboratively by all the health professionals involved in Mr. Marchand’s care.
Step 2: Reflection and Analysis of the Experience
My experience at the orthopedic unit helped me realize and demonstrate the importance of teamwork in delivering patient care.
