The Institute of Medicine (IOM) collaborated with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to formulate initiatives aimed at improving the nursing profession and to an extent the entire healthcare system. The report appreciated that the nursing profession was critical to the success of the medical system, which required radical changes. The committee formulated a framework to enhance nursing care. This paper analyzes the committee report to indicate how it concerns the nursing profession, while simultaneously examining how the action plan has worked in the state of Texas.
Four key messages
Firstly, nurses should apply their training and education in their practice. The report indicated a need to maximize in the contribution of nurses to the American healthcare system (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Currently, a majority of nurses are confined in acute care settings, yet care is shifting from the healthcare facilities to the community setting. Nurses should be permitted to exercise their training in the emerging areas. Secondly, nurses need to attain a higher education level. The education system for nurses need improvement to ensure that they can deal with future healthcare challenges (Institute of Medicine, 2011). An improved education will ensure that nurses can deliver a high-quality care across all settings.
Thirdly, the report indicates the need to nurses to be partners with other healthcare practitioners in restructuring the healthcare system. The healthcare system in the U.S. requires transformation to fulfil the existing and forthcoming healthcare needs (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Nurses are critical in formulating such changes together with the other healthcare professionals. The involvement of nurses in the redesigning of the healthcare system has been critical given that nurses have a unique perspective derived from their direct contact with patients. Being a full partner in the healthcare has allowed nurses to take full responsibility in identifying weaknesses and devising appropriate measures to improve service delivery. The last key message is the need for nurses to ensure better data collection. Nurses cannot undertake the necessary changes in the healthcare system without an understanding of the structure of the system and the contribution of the various healthcare workers (Institute of Medicine, 2011).
