Acculturation Experience in Nursing Profession
Acculturation refers to the process where individuals adopt the social patterns or cultural traits of a specific group of people. In the scenario at hand, it involves acquiring relevant experience in the nursing profession. For a new graduate to obtain relevant skills in the nursing profession, he or she must undergo the process of acculturation. Similarly, a new nursing colleague who wants to join a team of caregivers must acquire relevant experience. For this reason, acculturation is critical to the nursing field since it enables caregivers to obtain significant things in their career life.
My acculturation experience was one month of training, where I was supposed to watch and learn from my colleagues. Although I had acquired the knowledge of how nurses are expected to undertake their duties, acculturation was critical to the acquisition of proper nursing skills. For example, it was clear to me that a nurse should approach his or her patients with respect and understand them to develop a trusting relationship with them (Mitchell, Fabbro, & Shaw, 2017). Without this authentic relationship, it can be difficult to know whether a particular treatment is working effectively. As such, my one-month training was significant since I understood various things that are vital in the nursing profession.
Similarly, the acculturation experience of a new nursing colleague who joined my team within the past year entails observing and learning. Specifically, the training is the same since both the new nurse and the graduate needs to watch and learn how things are done in real life. In other words, even after reading various books and acquiring adequate knowledge in the field of nursing, it can be challenging to be an outstanding nurse without acculturation experience in nursing.
