Nursing practice has improved from a profession that was only for women to one that has become formal and practiced by all genders. During its formative years, women were thought to be more suited to the role since they were viewed as extending the care they provided at home to hospitals. Currently, nursing has become a profession that requires training, which has increased its prestige and has also resulted in a more diversified staff.
Nowadays, nurses usually apply theoretical knowledge in clinical practice. They are required to focus on patient care and adopt a more patient-centered approach. Consequently, nurses have become more involved in their patient’s lives and they are aware of the different aspects of the patients social and economic lives. Such knowledge has enabled them to become competent advocates of patient’s rights, which has improved quality of care in clinical settings. Nurses have also advanced their knowledge and skill to the extent that they can perform all the tasks that physicians can do in clinical settings.
