Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Database for Surgical Site Infections (SSI)
Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) are nosocomial infections incubated at the time of admission (Custodio, 2021). Such infections often manifest 48 hours after hospital admission. These infections can occur within wards and during procedures like surgery. Among the most common HAIs are Surgical Site Infections (SSI) which occur following surgery in places where the surgery took place. The problem with SSI is that they can be masked by the issue that caused the surgery in the first place and can be confusing, especially for new and inexperienced nurses in terms of diagnosis and reporting (Wilson, 2017). However, in the era of evidence-based practice (EBP), such nurses have access to various sources that can help them understand the diagnostic procedures or process of SSI. The current paper investigates some of the online sources and provides several peer-reviewed articles consistent with SSI diagnosis.
Communication Strategies
According to Bekkum and Hilton (2013), communication skills are central to narrowing the gap between evidence-based practice and patient-centered care, which results in improved patient health outcomes. These skills are necessary for acquiring knowledge from online sources and sharing it with colleagues and patients. Therefore, the current communication strategy involves finding the best online resources (databases), the required sources, their interpretation, and practical use. This means that a nurse must know how to search for sources, critically understand them, communicate them to patients and colleagues, and apply the knowledge practically.
Sources of Online Information
There are thousands of online peer-reviewed databases globally, some of which do not apply to nursing. Therefore, the first step is to identify some of the common databases that have information related to the nursing practice. The step allows the nurses to reduce the number of avenues from which they can find information, reducing the information clutter phenomena. Some of the core databases include CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and EBSCOhost. CINAHL indexes nursing and allied literature, including nursing publications and journals from the American Nurses Association and the National League for Nursing. PubMed, on the other hand, provides references and abstracts on biomedical and life science topics. Thirdly, Medline is a premier bibliographic database that contains over 28 million references to journals on biomedicine. Records are indexed with the National Library of Medicine (NLM)'s subject headings in this database. The Cochrane Library, on the other hand, is a collection of databases in medicine and healthcare specialties and focuses on systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The library is key in summarizing and interpreting medical research outcomes. Lastly, the EBSCOhost is a collection of peer-reviewed journals, professional papers, e-journals, books, and magazines related to different knowledge domains, including nursing.
While all these databases are...
