Promoting the accuracy of pulse oximetry results in the newborn
A relevant study on pulse oximetry in newborns is, “The nurse champion model for advancing newborn screening of critical congenital heart disease (CHDD). In the study, Farner, et al., (2014), highlight the case for nurse champions to implement effective nurse educational programs for screening newborns for CHDD. One of the variables to promote the accuracy of pulse oximetry is training and empowering nurses focusing on evaluation and aid in understanding the screening process. Another factor is following a reference standard, where nurses provide leadership and share information to facilitate timely follow-up.
Benefits and limitations of performing a pulse oximetry on all newborns
The pulse oximetry screening in newborns evaluates the oxygen levels and determines whether there is inadequate oxygenation or heart deficiencies (Pillitteri, 2014). Performing a pulse oximetry can save the lives of newborns when there is early detection. The screening also reduces or prevents the risk of disability, when there is assessment of oxygen levels to determine the likelihood of congenital heart defects of conditions, and there is early intervention. The pulse oximetry does not detect all heart problems and congenital heart disease, and this may give the wrong impre...
