Evidence-based practice (EBP) constitutes an activity since it entails applying research findings in routine clinical decision-making and patient care processes. It is an activity because it incorporates five fundamental steps: (a) problem identification, (b) accessing quality evidence, (c) critically appraising the evidence, (d) applying the changes into clinical practice, and (e) evaluating the change within the practice (Stannard, 2019). However, nurses mostly employ a pragmatic approach in their routine practice to achieve quality patient outcomes.
Various factors influence EBP application within research, education, and nursing. Some of the influences include an individual’s knowledge status, implementation, facilitators, attitudes, and barriers. Despite EPB being widely embraced within the aforementioned areas, aspects such as nurses’ use of critical thinking to evaluate complex situations, conducting health assessment, and making decisions could undermine its practical application (Li, Cao, & Zhu, 2019). In this vein, knowledge requires more coordination and collaborations before it translates into implementation to amplify the facilitators and mitigate the hurdles.
The research would use a framework (e.g., mixed approach, qualitative, or quantitative) to create new knowledge. EBP seeks and uses quality and reliable clinical evidence primarily derived from research to make patient-care rationales and decisions.
