The prevalent immigrant population in Delaware is Latino/Hispanic. In the U.S. Hispanic make up about 18.1 percent of the population. In Delaware, the Hispanic/Latino population stood at 937,764 as of July 1, 2019, which is approximately 9.6 percent of the state’s population (United, n.d.). Majority of Hispanics in Delaware are U.S. born. Out of this population, 5.6 percent are under 5 years, 20.9 percent are 18 years, and 51.7 percent are 65 and above (United, n.d.). About 73 percent out of the 83,000 Hispanics are born in the country while 27 percent are foreign-born. United (n.d.) indicates that 60 percent of the Hispanic community in Delaware are not Mexican with 40 percent are of Mexican heritage. Out of the Hispanics in Delaware, 0.9 percent come from Central America including Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Hispanics from South America make up 0.4 percent mostly from Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. Others are from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Spain.
Another demographic information is education. United (n.d.) notes that approximately 89.8 percent of Hispanic population 25 years and above living in Delaware have a high school diploma. About 31.4 percent of Hispanics aged 25 and above have a bachelor’s degree or higher (United, n.d.). Additionally, there are 24,077 Hispanic children enrolled in the K-12 grade levels in Delaware. The Hispanic/Latino children account for about 17 percent of the entire student population in the state, which is about 138, 371 students. The state is also home to about 12,730 English learners, making about 9 percent of the student population. In Delaware, the median household income for Hispanic families is 65627 dollars while per capita income as of 2014 to 2018 stood at 33,989 dollars. About 11.3 percent of Hispanic population in Delaware live in poverty (United, n.d.). In regards to family, households in Hispanic/Latino community as of 2014 to 2018 are 357,765. The number of persons per household is an average of 2.58 while persons living in the same house in the past year are about 87.3 percent. About 13 percent of households speak another language apart from English.
One communicable disease in Delaware is measles. Delaware has not reported incidents of measles in the recent past. However, in the 1995 to 2012 outbreaks of measles with higher incidents of the disease occurring within the Hispanic community.
