Personally, I am very satisfied with my height, and I think I do not need to go through any procedures to be taller. It is a risk that could cost me the ability to walk and weaken my bones as the body tries to compensate and adapt to my new stature. Undergoing bone lengthening procedure does not always guarantee a person the expected results. It is also very expensive, and therefore I think if the money is used wisely, I can access the advantages taller people have over me.
The lengthening procedure takes advantage of the human bones healing processes, especially in long bones. The doctors deliberately and carefully cut the bones and attach metal bars and pins to the bones to create a gap between the cut bone. The body naturally has its self-healing mechanisms, and a new bone grows in the gap between the two bones. After the bone grows, the metal bars are removed once the new bone can take on the weight of the whole body. The procedure takes advantage of the healing abilities of the body.
Closed growth plate means the body cannot grow bone tissue and therefore it cannot increase in length. Performing bone lengthening procedure on anyone with closed plates is riskier and likely to lead to weaker bones. Its chances of success are very slim, and the healing process takes a longer time than usual. It is, however, not advisable to attempt bone lengthening if your plates have closed since their ability to grow new bone tissue is unlikely.
