In such a case, the patient may not be a party to the decisions since they may be incapacitated. However, family, relatives, and other care providers may have input into the care decision. Sound decision-making ensures that the correct choices are made and that the safety and well-being of the patient are not compromised.

This follows the outcomes of the decisions, especially those that manifest in the patient care outcomes. For example, if the decisions cause massive medical errors, patient death and injuries may cause an organization to ruin its reputation. An organizational leader often serves as an example to the followers. Therefore, poor decisions reflect negatively on the followers, who may lose trust and confidence in the leader. Losing trust and confidence could also mean that staff members are reluctant to implement the directives given by their leader.

Evidence-based decision-making is part of evidence-based healthcare practice. According to Immonen et al. (2022), evidence-based decision-making entails taking into account available evidence to make choices or decisions in healthcare. Other elements that must be considered include the preferences of patients and their relatives, the care environment, and the experience and professionalism of the healthcare personnel. Research must be conducted, and the outcomes should be synthesized to help inform care decisions. The main idea is that decisions cannot be made based on feelings or intuitions. Even with the patients’ values and clinicians’ expertise, available evidence forms the core of the decision. An example of how evidence-based decision-making applies in healthcare is that a physician treating a patient has to consider the patient data and clinical test results in administering treatment or interventions.
