In the two years duration, master's prepared nurses are equipped with essential competencies and skills that put them in a better position to initiate and spearhead the change process in the specific areas that they discharge their professional help. This paper seeks to highlight the essential elements that psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners must have to be effective change agents based on the background information on the particular practice issue, which requires change. A change model that nurses trained at the master's level can utilize to bring about the desired changes shall also be described. Besides, the paper will propose a plan that the nurses can use to initiate and address pertinent issues to improve health outcomes.
Essential Elements that Master’s Prepared Nurses need to be Effective Agents of Change
Nurses with a master's degree are better equipped to solve a myriad of challenges that psychiatric patients go through as they seek care daily. Improved patient outcomes are achieved when PMHNPs provide patient-centered care. For this to be attained, psychiatric facilities must use the models of care that will enhance the provision of coordinated and connected care, which enhances collaboration and communication among the different providers of care (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). Unfortunately, most of these facilities have adopted models that do not match the needs of PMHNPs and patients, making it futile to render quality and patient-centered care. In this paper, Lippitt's model of change is considered a suitable tool that PMHNPs can utilize to address the issue of patient-centered care.
Background Information on the Healthcare Service Delivery that requires Change
The primary obstacle with preventing PMHNPs from providing patient-centered care centers on the lack of coordination with other providers of care. In their bid to improve patient outcomes, psychiatric institutions only focus on recruiting highly competent practitioners without caring, whether they possess the skills and experience in the field. These facilities have good intentions for psychiatric patients but always face the same challenges, such as lack of employee motivation, poor patient outcomes, and increased morbidity and mortality rates. There is a need for PMHNPs to work in partnership with other care teams, considering that they all yearn to achieve the same goals (Gray, 2018). Furthermore, there is a need for the professional needs of master's prepared psychiatric nurses to be redefined to overcome the confusion that these professionals encounter while providing patient-centered care.
