It is the mandate of the school nurses to develop and implement health plans in schools as well as dispense medications; school nurses are also responsible for training teachers on how to administer the necessary care to students. School nurses practice at early childhood, public, alternative, private, and vocational schools across the United States. There are also some school nurses who practice in international or Department of Defense schools located overseas in US military bases (DeGrandpre, n.d.). Although some schools still employ licensed practical nurses (LPNs), the minimum recommended certifications for a school nurse in the United States are a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) and registered nurse (RN) certification. The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) are the boards that are mandated to conduct voluntary national certification of school nurses across the United States (Selekman, 2006).
