The school counselor plays a crucial role in the life of a student. In order to establish the importance of a school counselor in shaping the life of a student, I set out to interview a school counselor and the information and lessons that I gathered from the interview were priceless. The interview took place at the dining hall where the teacher works during lunch hour and lasted for about ninety minutes. Below is a report of the essay and the lessons that I learned from it. It was surprising to learn that the knowledge that I had about school counselors had changed over the years.
One thing that came out of my interview with Ms. Tyra Owen a counselor at the Philrose school district was that school counselors do more than what their training entails. Ms. Owen notified me that she had been a counselor for ten years and that this had been her passion since third grade. Her desire to become a counselor had been spurred by her school counselor at elementary school and the good relationship that they had made her want to become a school counselor later on in life.
Ms. Owen explained that her focus is providing developmental focus at all levels. The philosophy at her school is that all the students are unique and should, therefore, be treated with the uniqueness that they deserve. Through the social and academic guidance that is offered, the students can become fruitful and be more responsible later on in life. Ms. Owen explained that she had seen students who were not performing in their school work become better after her intervention and this taught her that most of the challenges that students went through could be handled by applying the right counseling principles.
While her school has a clearly defined program that counselors should follow, Ms. Owen explained that most of the time she is called to attend to duties that are beyond the scope of her training. This is mainly caused by the building of rapport between the students and the counselor. Although she is only supposed to be involved in the student’s developmental issues, Ms. Owen explained that most of the times she is called upon to address medical issues among the students that do not require the attention of the school nurse.
