The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has given recommendations to improve the delivery of safety and quality care. Health professionals are dedicated to supporting these recommendations to improve patient outcomes. The health care sector has changed rapidly, and nurses ought to reflect how they can integrate changes in the workplace to achieve optimal health outcomes. As the role of nurses’ changes it will be necessary for them to advance their education, serve diverse communities and respond to an ever evolving health care system. This is a reflection on IOM Future of Nursing recommendations 4, 5 and 6.
IOM Nursing Recommendations
Recommendation 4
I fit in with this recommendation as I am now pursuing a BSN degree, having already acquired an Associate degree in Nursing. Health care organizations are to recruit nursing students from diverse settings, and the BSN will allow attaining higher education and working as a Family Nursing Practitioner (FNP) in the future. Nursing turnover is a challenge for health care organizations who incur extra costs of replacement. It is necessary to seek more exposure in the workplace to gain experience during the education program. Increasing the number of nurses by 2020 is possible, and it is the BSN degree is the first step to supporting nursing professional development the BSN programs prepare nurses to improve their clinical decision-making to improve patient outcome.
Recommendation 5
Admission into the BSN program is an opportunity to develop skills that will impact health care provision, patient outcome and shape health policy. The more nurses acquire undergraduate Nursing degrees the more they are likely to acquire Doctorate degrees, and this will double the number of nurses with doctorate by 2020. This is because nurses with the BSN have better research knowledge, professional development skills and understand the healthcare service delivery more than Associate Degree holders. Acquiring more and professional technical skills is associated with transforming the health care system, where education and training will improve the nursing profession (Steelman, 2014).

Furthering education will enhance professional development, making it easier to practice as nurse in diverse settings. Staying in the nursing programs to complete the courses will be a top priority as this facilitates learning, while engaging with employers to learn more. Acquiring the required skills and the work conditions affects the work environment, and satisfaction with nursing practice.
