The Usefulness of Banner’s Novice Theory
Patricia Benner model outlines five stages of nursing namely novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert. The central concepts of Benner’s model are those of competence, skill acquisition, experience, clinical knowledge, and practical knowledge. She identifies seven domains of nursing practice that includes administering and monitoring role, situation management, diagnostic and patient monitoring functions, helping role, teaching service among other important aspects of nursing practice (Benner, 2001).
Benner model is useful because from a nurse educator’s perspective, both the novice to expert theory and reflective practice are advantageous in teaching and learning strategies. Patricia Benner emphasizes on developing proficiency in the clinical area, possessing a high level of intuition, and analytic ability by recalling former experiences.
