Understanding the characteristics of the aging process is essential for any healthcare provider. It allows him to grasp better the physiological, psychological, and even emotional processes that must be taken into consideration during the provision of care. Accordingly, some general characteristics should be expected of the elderly. For example, bones tend to decrease in size and density, while muscles tend to become less flexible and strong (Mayo Clinic, 2020). This deterioration also goes the same with the cells and tissues in the brain. Notably, studies have consistently shown that aging has caused the deterioration of the hippocampus, which is the organ that has the most significant function in the formation and retrieval of memories (Zhang, Cherian, & Jin, 2019).
