Working for long hours has been one of the main challenges in the nursing department. Nursing should work in shifts to ensure efficient and smooth working, but factors like inadequate employees, inadequate briefing, and poor working schedule lead to some of the nurses working overtime. Working overtime can be disastrous to the nurse and patient; they may fail to deliver appropriate services to their patients, leading to improper medication or even death due to fatigue and lack of concentration. Nursing is a physically and emotionally involving career; hence, breaks and minimum working hours are necessary to avoid stress.
The study of this issue is important due to the debate that arises between the 8-hour working schedule and the 12 hours working schedule. Most nurses in the acute patients' department prefer the 1-hour schedule though the health programs see that as being overworked (Gaskins, Rich, Lawson, Schernhammer, Missmer, & Chavarro, 2015). According to the nurses, a 12-hour working schedule help the patient and nurse bond due to ample time and monitor the impact of the medications on the patient.
