Please read this scholarly article called, "The Merchant of Venice," found in the book below, The Meaning of Shakespeare by Harold Goddard. It begins on page 81 and is fairly long - so you'll want to start reading it ASAP. Although it is challenging to read, it has some great ideas in it that really help to explain the play. Also, it is a nice example of good critical thinking and strong writing. Enjoy!

Goddard's mention of the casket story, the bond story and the ring story is symbolic. The casket story refers to the characters having traits that cannot be predicted in the spectators or readers' eyes. In this play, Goddard digs deep into expanding what lies within and without a person. He focuses on Bassanio and Antonio's character, who present a deceptive lifestyle in the eyes of his friends, readers, and the audience (p. 85 & 88).
The bond story brings the bigger picture of the character of the Young Doctor of Law's. The distinction between the letters and the spirit of the law are vivid. Finally, the ring's story symbolizes the traits, turning on the difference between the outer and the inner essence of promise.
