Interprofessional Collaboration
Interprofessional Collaboration refers to when several health workers from diverse professional backgrounds work together with communities, families, and patients to achieve the best quality of care. Most healthcare personnel only have the sets of skills that exists within their realm of understanding. This is to mean that the farthest they can go in their services is limited to just as far as their scope of professionalism goes. In order to ensure high quality and convenient service delivery, there is the need for these individuals to work hand in hand with other professionals from different fields as well. The collective input by individuals from diverse fields is quite crucial in the kind of healthcare accorded. Interprofessional collaboration is essential to hospitals and dispensaries in various ways. It will help in the prevention of medication errors. This collaboration ensures that institutional policies associated with medication transcription are observed. It also enhances patient care and outcomes and fosters fast treatment.
The above is done by prescribing the right medicine to the right patient following the correct dosage. This also helps to enhance patient safety (Sargeant, 2009). In research conducted in the medical population in the United States, 2016, it was found out around 575,000 deaths were caused by medical errors (Makary and Daniel, 2016). That figure is reducing with the interprofessional collaboration. This approach enables the reconciliation of patients from one hospital or dispensary to the other where higher-quality care can be offered. This reconciliation also helps in reducing medical errors. Collaboration will also help in improving staff relationships; hence best results are achieved.
