In the past, the family was considered a social unit consisting of one or more parents with their children. Today, the definition of family has changed to encompass various family structures. In this regard, a modern family is defined as a unit with two or more people with shared goals and values and long-term commitments to one another (Sharma, 2013). The definition incorporates modern family structures such as nuclear, single-parent, blended, LGBTQ+ units, chosen families, foster, and legal guardians, among others.
Nontraditional families should be acknowledged to protect the rights of individuals. For example, acknowledging all family structures can ensure that family benefits, such as marital rights, can be achieved.
