Hello, welcome to our weekly Podcast STATE OF THE NATION, where we talk about the history, leaders, the media, challenges, and successes of the American nation. On our show today, we reflect on two speeches titled I have a dream by Martin Luther King Jr and the 1854 speech by Chief Seattle.
My name is Carrey Francis in Atlanta.
Every year, Americans celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr with a day of service. On this podcast today, we reflect on the message in his speech I Have a Dream. This speech was delivered in 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In the speech, Martin decries the discrimination and segregation of Black Americans or popularly known as Negroes. He states that Black Americans are treated by white Americans as if they are not deserving of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the American constitution. The late activist is saddened by the fact that Black Americans do not vote either because they do not have anything to vote for or do not deserve to vote. Martin conveys that though the USA is a resourceful and endowed country, most Negroes live in abject poverty because they do not have the privilege of opportunities, jobs, and resources like their white counterparts. The whites see blacks as people who should be slaves to their interests, hence were used to do hard jobs and poorly paid (Talk of the nation, 2010).

However, though America was bedeviled by racial discrimination, infringement of the rights and freedoms of the Negroes, and inhumane treatment, Luther King Junior has a dream that future Black Americans would be free from racial discrimination, will enjoy equal rights of liberty, life, and pursuit of happiness. King is hopeful for a country where all, Black or white, Asian or Indian, will enjoy equal freedoms and security of justice (Talk of the nation, 2010).

Though King Jr, through his speech, championed for unalienable rights of life, the pursuit of happiness, and liberty 57 years ago, Martin Luther King's speech I have Dream showcases the racial discrimination that minority groups suffer in the hands of White Americans. While the architects signed for the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence for all, but this promise though it was supposed to be to both White and Black Americans, turned to give the former greater rights compared to the latter (Talk of the nation, 2010).
