Diabetes in African American Women
Diabetes is among the most prevalent chronic conditions in the American public health system. According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report CITATION DRI20 \l 2057 (DRI, 2020), over 34.2 million individuals in the USA have diabetes, 7.3 million remain undiagnosed. Further studies have shown that as of 2016, non-Hispanic blacks were twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to be diagnosed with diabetes (Cheng et al., 2019). Looking at this group along gender lines, Bacon et al. CITATION Bac17 \n \t \l 2057 (2017) established that the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is double that in non-Hispanic white women. Thus, when the prevalence of diabetes is observed in this order, African American women are the most vulnerable. The current paper seeks to interrogate this phenomenon by establishing reasons why and potential alternative solutions.
