Each year, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2019). If left untreated, diabetic patients are at risk for several alterations, including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, neuropathy, and blindness. There are various methods for treating diabetes, many of which include some form of drug therapy. The type of diabetes as well as the patient’s behavior factors will impact treatment recommendations.
For this Discussion, you compare types of diabetes, including drug treatments for type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes.
To prepare
Review the Resources for this module and reflect on differences between types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, gestational, and juvenile diabetes.
Select one type of diabetes to focus on for your initial post.
Consider one type of drug used to treat the type of diabetes you selected, including proper preparation and administration of this drug. Then, reflect on dietary considerations related to treatment.

It is irrefutable that diabetes is one of the highly prevalent comorbid diseases associated with adverse health complications that fuel the high mortality rate among the American population. Each year, more than 1.5 million American people are usually diagnosed with diabetic conditions (American Diabetes Association, 2019). In this regard, diabetes has become a national health crisis. Should the disease be left untreated, diabetic patients are severely exposed to the risk of several complications. Various methods are frequently used for the treatment of diabetes, most of which are in drug therapy form. The treatment considerations are explicitly guided by the type of diabetes and the behavior of the patients, such as dietary habits. In this discussion, therefore, the focus is to offer detailed insight on type 1 diabetes (diabetes mellitus), its treatment, necessary dietary considerations, and its impact on patients.
Type 1 diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is referred as a chronic illness chiefly characterized by the inability of the body to effectively produce adequate amounts insulin. The condition arises due to autoimmune destructions of the beta cells within the pancreas, resulting in increased blood sugar levels. Besides diabetes mellitus, other most common types include type 2 diabetes (diabetes insipidus), gestational diabetes, and juvenile diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is an impairment in the way the body uses and regulates glucose as a fuel, resulting in the circulation of too much sugar in the bloodstream. Gestational diabetes is inextricably linked with type 2 diabetes, and is usually diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy. It mainly affects how the body cells use glucose, causing high blood sugar that might have effects on the pregnancy and the health of the baby. Juvenile diabetes and type 1 diabetes embody the same characteristic as they are both insulin-dependent since they occur when there is little or no insulin in the body (Abdelalim, 2021). However, each type of diabetes has a specific form of treatment considered suitable for its management.
The predominantly used form of treatment for type 1 diabetes is insulin therapy. Insulin is needed by all patients with type 1 diabetes because they often become ketoacidosis if not administered.
