Describe normal development in children and adolescents?
Normal development refers to when children achieve milestones such as walking, talking, smiling social during the specific age bracket. These skills are acquired at an age consistent with the rate of the average child in the population. The development milestones also occur orderly with a child progressively learning one skill after another (Bellman, Byrne, & Sege, 2013). If there is the late acquisition of these skills, then a child is experiencing developmental delays.
Explain development delays?
This is where there is a prolonged acquisition of skills in children. Their performance is lower than children of a similar age. There are delays in vital developmental domains such as social skills, self-care, cognition, fine motor skills, speech and language. Development delays also include unusual development patterns in the core domains (Bellman, Byrne, & Sege, 2013). A child’s progression may follow a pathological course making early intervention measures crucial to remedy the abnormalities.
