Introduction
Physician assistants and Nurse practitioner can assist to alleviate some of the major care shortage that is currently facing the United States. However, their scope of practice is usually limited by the regulations of the state (Price, 2016). The following study will report both longitudinal and cross-sectional trends in the jurisdiction of practice regulations for physician assistants and nurse practitioners for ten years. All the regulations from 2001 to 2010 were put together and explained concerning joining the practice standards, the involvement of diagnosis/treatment, controlled substances and prescriptive authority (Price, 2016). The findings of the study indicate that most of the states tried to loosen regulations thus granting more autonomy and authority to nurse practitioner as well as physician assistants especially in regards to prescriptive authority and the involvement of a physician in diagnosis/treatment.
Also, most states raised the barriers to entry thus demanding high levels of education before one joins the practice. Comprehensive knowledge of the trends of the state in physician assistant and nurse practitioner regulation should show current efforts to ensure that the scope-of-practice in the U.S is standardised.
