Barriers to Learning Presentation: Diabetes Student's Name Institutional Affiliation Barriers to Learning Presentation: Diabetes Limited health literacy has been identified as a universal barrier affecting the learning and presentation of health disorders. According to Weiss (2007), health literacy is when individuals are being able to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services to improve their health statuses. Despite the advancements in technology and continuous campaigns on the importance of education, still most of the American adults have low reading skills hence are not able to understand any information they read (Weiss, 2007). This is due to language and cultural differences. Majority of the American population are not native speakers of English. They have poor health outcomes, little understanding of their health issues, and poor compliance rates (Pawlak, 2005). The health care providers can overcome this barrier if they assess the literacy levels of their clients and modify their systems to meet the needs of the patients. One way of overcoming this barrier is by assessing the literacy level of the patients, use the individualized education approach to meet their needs and ensure that they understand the information being presented. This requires that the health providers have cultural competency to address other barriers such as communication. They can also present the information slowly to allow the patients to absorb it and avoid use of medical terms that may be impossible for the patients to understand. They can also limit the information that they present to the patients to avoid overloading them and encourage them to ask questions during the presentation. The social learning theory will be appropriate since it empowers and increases self-confidence in the clients resulting in the desired change (Rankin, et al., 2005) Biyu is a 30 years old Chinese single mother recently migrated to the United States with her 12 years old daughter Jingfei. Her daughter is in sixth grade and their family history has cases of diabetes. Few weeks ago, during the school diabetes routine check, Jingfei was diagnosed of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (TD1M). Miss Biyu is a waitress in one of the Chinese hotels in town. She admits that she has limited health literacy since she has been in the catering profession since she was young. After realizing that her daughter has the condition she took her to a nearby clinic where she was given a handout of the condition that illustrated how one should take care of a diabetic patient. Taking care of children with TD1M is quite challenging to parents as most of them have described it as "life-altering and all-consuming," (Olinder, Nyhlin, & Smide, 2011). At home she had trouble understanding the information that was in the handout and she asked for help from her neighbor who was glad to help her at that moment but will not be there always since the neighbor is a working stude...
