Define negotiation as it applies to patient education.
Negotiation in a health setting involves the communication between a health practitioner and the patient regarding procedures and treatment options (Eisemann, Wagner, & Reece, 2018). Life-changing decisions require negotiation between the doctor and patient to ensure that the patient can understand any benefits, risks, and side effects before deciding (Adams, 2010). Doctors thus must employ negotiation skills when necessary to ensure patients can adhere to a particular treatment option. For instance, a doctor can interact with a patient suffering from chronic cancer to decide on options such as chemotherapy or hospice care to help decide on the patient’s best interest.
Explain how the change in the patient's status through the years has affected patient education.
The onset of technology has enabled patients to research different symptoms and learn about various ailments they may suffer over time. Furthermore, an increase in chronic illnesses has led to increased demand for knowledge about healthy lifestyles. Therefore, such experience enables patients to interact with their doctors and participate in decision making on treatment and medical procedures (Wagner, Radionova, Rieger, & Siegel, 2019). Patient education has thus improved healthcare delivery, focusing on preventive actions in the patient to enhance their well-being. More patients have a basic understanding of their conditions before seeking the opinion of health practitioners in several cases.
List the pros and cons of negotiation.
Negotiation allows the patient to allay their fears by expressing their opinions regarding prescribed treatments or procedures, thus allowing the doctor to discuss any concerns (Wagner, Radionova, Rieger, & Siegel, 2019). Furthermore, the health provider can also integrate patient requests to find a solution that best fits the situation.
On the other hand, negotiation may slow down the decision-making process due to the problem of agreeing on a particular aspect of a treatment or procedure (Wagner, Radionova, Rieger, & Siegel, 2019). Apart from that, doctor decisions may negatively affect the patient’s health, especially in critical treatment due to the patient's hesitance to agree with certain decisions.
Describe the general conditions that would be included in a patient contract
A patient contract will include a confidentiality clause that protects doctor-patient conversations and information, ensuring no unauthorized access by any other parties. Apart from that, the contract also provides for the requirement of prompt attendance to any set appointments by the patient to ensure adherence (Volk, Lieber, Kim, Ubel, & Schneider, 2012). An additional aspect of a patient contract involves the next of kin or an individual with the power of attorney who makes decisions when the patient becomes unresponsive.
Discuss old age and the baby boomer
Baby boomers refer to the group of individuals born between 1946 and 1964 hence representing the population of individuals between the ages of 56 – 74 worldwide. Baby boomers thus represent a signi...
