Nurse as a knowledge worker
Nurses are essentially knowledge workers. It is notable that the competencies of the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) practice at the system level or organization level are linked to knowledge management. Nurses should understand their role in knowledge management as well as the technology and informatics tools that are available to them (American Nurses Association, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to explain the way nursing staffs manage knowledge in the context of clinical work environments, explain the way I have been able to manage change in my workflow due to computer-based IT, to explain my present use of technology, as well as the impact that IT has on the profession of nursing.
Clinical nursing work environment and managing knowledge
Nursing staffs manage knowledge in the clinical environment. A nurse manager develops knowledge worker skills that are related to the collection of data, analysis of data, as well as identifying clinical trends and patterns. The knowledge worker skills that are utilized by nurses in patient-care delivery are data gatherer, knowledge user, information user, as well as knowledge builder (Staggers, 2012). For instance, after reviewing data on patient falls (data gatherer) on her unit, the nurse manager finds out that the fall rate is in fact higher than she anticipated. She interprets reports from the patients, close relatives of the patient, and employees (information user) in order to obtain understanding and knowledge regarding this crucial clinical matter (Staggers, 2012). The nurse then compares the data of the patients with nursing knowledge that is evidence-based (knowledge user). She then aggregates clinical data on every patient fall in the healthcare organization throughout the hospital in order to produce or form new knowledge, understandings, as well as approaches for preventing falls in the future (knowledge builder) and improve the outcomes of patients safety (Staggers, 2014).
Managing change in workflow: Bar-Coded Medication Administration (BCMA)
I have been able to manage change in my workflow due to making use of Bar-Coded Medication Administration technological tool. Prior to using this computer-based information technology, I used to make several medication errors during administration of medication. One method that I used to reduce errors during the administration of medication to patients is BCMA. It pairs implementation of an IT solution known as Electronic Medication Administration or simply eMAR, with item-specific identification, bar-coding (McGonigle, Hunter & Hebda, 2012). This computer-based IT allowed me to comply with the 5 Rights of medication administration; meaning the right patient, right medicine is administered, right dosage of medication is given, using the right route, and at the right time. This technology introduced considerable workflow changes for me as a nurse, and necessitated targeted strategies for change management.
Current use of information technology: Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
The IT that I currently use today that I did not utilize previously is the Electronic Medical Record. This information technology is...
