The controversy surrounding dissociative disorders
Dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly known as multiple personality disorder, is a complex disorder in which there are recurring gaps of distinct personality states, recalled experiences, dissociative experiences, derealization, and depersonalizations (Brand et al., 2019). One perspective highlights the cause of DID is trauma, but others argue it is iatrogenic. The rate of dissociative disorders diagnoses has increased in recent years, partly because of clinicians’ greater awareness of the disorder and, at times over, diagnosis. It has even been proposed that dissociative disorders diagnosis may also have increased because of patient suggestions and responses to clinician questions and media influence. At the same time, there is a lack of training on identifying, evaluating, and treating dissociative disorders and underestimating their prevalence, leading to many cases of dissociative disorders being undetected.
Professional beliefs about dissociative disorders
Dissociative disorders are closely linked with extreme trauma during childhood, where people adopt denial as a way of coping with traumatic experiences. For instance, those who talk to imaginary friends are likely to have a dissociative identity with the” friends” like a solution to past trauma. On the other hand, when trauma is later in life, it is more likely that an individual will have PTSD symptoms (Krüger & Fletcher, 2017). The environment affects how people react and intricacy with others. If in the formative years children experience abuse or are in a highly disorganized environment, with poor social and family support, they are likely to exhibit a disoriented attachment style.
There is increased research on trauma and neglect comorbid trauma-related as dissociative symptoms tend to be trauma and neglect-related. The dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the dissociative disorders common among those with early life trauma, especially when there is emotional detachment (Swart et al., 2019).
