 In his case, Mike is a lab technician who runs late for work, an incident that had earlier earned him a warning from his supervisor. Mike’s supervisor had posited that any more lateness would lead to termination of his employment. Mike really loves his job despite his continuous lateness since the work offers him income to take care of his family. When Mike arrives at work, he notices a spill on the floor at the reception and further delay clearing the spill would mean that he will delay in clocking time even though cleaning is not part of his work. Consequences of A Failure to Stop and To Report
Safety of the hospital is very important and therefore, reporting the spill will mean that the hospital will be safe. Mike has an option of informing his boss that there is a spill at the lobby which he intends to clean up. However, the fear of losing his job tends to overweigh the need or urgency to clean the spill being that there is also a person assigned to do the cleaning.
In this case, Mike decides to ignore the spill and ends up clocking in. Consequences of a failure to report and report are grave when Mike realizes that the patient he was handling had fallen because of the spill leading to a hip injury and was undergoing a serious pain. This makes Mike feel guilty of his actions. It may also be possible to sue Mike and further lose his job due to negligence.
Decision’s impact on patient safety
Mike’s action had a serious impact on the patient’s safety leading to a hip injury. The patient is frustrated and wonders why such an incident took place. She feels that the accident was as a result of negligence by the hospital (Di Pilla, 2009). The patient says that the hospital should have programs to take care of such issues and that the safety of the hospital should remain a priority. It is apparent that Mike’s decision led to both human and financial costs because of the money that is going to be used in the treatment and the injury that has caused the patient pain and suffering.
Risks for litigation
Premises liability demands that the hospital should be liable for injuries that occur on their property and therefore the hospital should have taken reasonable measure to assure the safety of its premises (McGillivray, 2017). Regular inspections of the premises are therefore necessary and prove of a slip largely relies on what the hospital owners knew in regard to the danger and the possible actions they took to ensure safety of any visitor (Di Pilla, 2009).
