Diabetes
Diabetes has emerged as a life-threatening disease in the 21st century and kills more people than HIV/AIDS and cancer combined. Due to the prevalence of the population towards contracting it through poor lifestyle, it is imperative to know how to avoid and manage it. The deaths that normally occur through diabetes usually relate to poor methods of handling the disease. This information seeks to empower those with and without diabetes to know how to avoid the disease, how to manage it, and living a quality lifestyle despite having it.
Causes of diabetes
-95251757045The cause of diabetes has to do with deficiency of the insulin hormone. The pancreas produces insulin in the body to aid in regulation of blood sugar level. Pancreas produces high amount of insulin when there is a lot of glucose in the blood to cause its conversion to glycogen and stored in body tissues (Dansinger, 2015). Diabetes therefore occurs due to production of low amount of insulin, no production of insulin or low response to insulin by the body: insulin resistance (Dansinger, 2015). There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body produces no insulin, while insulin deficiency or insulin resistance causes Prediabetes or Type 2 (MNT, 2016).
There is no clear cause of diabetes; however, scientists have outlined several factors that may lead to diabetes, known as Risk factors (DMT). Eating a lot of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins may lead to diabetes. These, coupled with obesity causes resistance to insulin absorption and lead to insulin resistance (DMT). Viruses such as Coxsackie B virus may attack the Beta (B) cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas, therefore impairing production of insulin (Ristow et al., 2003). Emotional stress, high alcohol intake and smoking may lead to diabetes due to increased blood sugar level (Dansinger, 2015).
