A theory is a set of structured ideas that are focused on providing meaning and explanation to some of the phenomena experienced. Theory offers a description of the phenomena in question so that it can be well understood, explains as to why the phenomena occur and finally offers a prediction of future occurrences based on the explanation (Butts & Rich, 2017). As such, theories involve asking specific questions about a phenomenon and answering those questions to explain. A model is a set of statements that describe a concept and attempt to explain the occurrence of a given phenomenon(Butts & Rich, 2017).A model utilizes a graphical or mathematical representation to illustrate the relationship between concepts. For example, Lydia Hall’s care, core, and cure theory have been simplified by the use of a diagram where circles represent the different concepts of the theory and show how they relate with each other. In nursing, models provide nurses with a framework that guide them both in nursing research and practice. Models facilitate communication of concepts in a simplified and easier to understand way. A concept is a mental abstract based on an experience or a phenomenon.
