Introduction
A tumor is considered a lump or mass of tissue that resembles a swelling. According to the National Cancer Institute, a tumor is, "an abnormal mass of tissue that results when cells divide more than they should or die when they should." As humans grow, develop, and age, cells grow, divide, and replace daily. As old cells are phased out, new ones are formed. It is a normal process for cells to grow and develop, but when cells reproduce quickly a tumor develops. Tumors vary in sizes right from a tiny nodule to large growth, and depending on the type, they can appear anywhere in a human body. There are three types of tumors: (1) benign tumors, (2)pre-malignant tumors; and (3) malignant tumors (Zaimy et al., 2017). The three-stage theory of carcinogenesis remains the major explanation of tumor and cancer development. According to the theory, cancerous tumors develop in three stages: initiation, promotion, and progression. Initiation is when cell mutation occurs which disrupts normal cell development. Mutation triggers cell growth which typically has an advantage over the original body cells. Every tumor is a threat to human health and calls for immediate diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate call for action. Lump or mass is a major sign of soft-tissue tumor and is painless. But depending on the anatomic location of growth, tumors can cause neurological symptoms by stretching or compressing sensitive body structures. Tumors and Cancer
Cancer results from an abnormal proliferation of any type of cell in the human body. As such, there are different types of cancer with each having a unique behavior and treatment method. Over the years, the issue in as much as cancer pathology is concerned is differentiating between a malignant and benign tumor (Johnson, Ha, Chen, & Davidson, 2018). Benign tumors grow anywhere but are not cancerous. When they grow, they can be removed through surgeries and do not regrow, they include fibroids, hemangiomas, and lipomas. Premalignant tumors grow anywhere in the body but unlike benign tumors, they have the potential of being cancerous. Examples of premalignant tumors are actinic keratosis, cervical dysplasia, metaplasia of the lung, and leucoplakia (Totzeck et al., 2019). The onset of premalignant cells is a red alert and calls for urgent medical attention. Malignant tumors are cancerous and when they grow they spread to different parts of the body. The three types of tumors are classified based on the type of cell they arise from.
Tumours or Cancers, are categorized into three groups namely sarcomas, carcinomas, and lymphoma/leukemias. While sarcomas are rare types of cells Carcinomas (malignancies of epithelial cells) contribute to about 90% of human cancers and occur in areas such as the pancreas, liver, colon, breast, stomach, and prostate. Leukemia which arises from cells of the human immune system contributes only to 8% of human malignancies (Elshahoubi et al., 2019).
